What is Prayer

What is Prayer

25And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. 26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.”

- Genesis 4:25-26.

I believe strongly in the efficacy of prayers. I have seen it turn so many situations around to the glory of God. The most important thing to note however is that it is God that answers prayers and as such the strength and power of God is always at the disposal of the person that prays.

What then is a prayer? How did it start? Who can pray? Prayer can be described as an invocation or act that seeks to build or activate a relationship with God. It can be done individually or communally (either as a family, with someone else, as a Church, a Nation etc.) It can occur in public or in private and it can involve any expression (words or songs) that is done towards God in a bid to communicate with the Most High.  Prayer is the key in the hands of faith to open the doors of blessings. Prayer is engaging the Almighty in a conversation. It is the greatest outlet of power, the mightiest force in the universe. Prayer is a defence in the moment of peril and with prayers we can express our love and appreciation to our God. Prayer is the channel of God’s grace, it will succeed when all else fails and it puts the power, love, grace and mercy of God at the disposal of the believer.

Prayer is the deepest expression of the soul, it is a two-way communication, it allows us to speak with God and enable us to hear from Him when He speaks to us. Prayers do not die, they have no expiration dates, it is the power of the believer. It is by prayers that we grant terrestrial licence for celestial interference, we allow and permit God to operate in our circumstances by our prayers. Prayer is man giving God the legal right to interfere in Earth’s affairs. It is God’s method of achieving results. It is with prayers that we can move the hands that move the world.

Prayer is a means of getting direction from the Most High God. God guides us in the place of prayers and His guidance lead us into unprecedented protection, favour and grace. Prayer is used to enforce the will of God in our situations and circumstances. It is not to change God – it is to bring about change in us and in our situations.

Prayer is a trade that should be learnt. It comes with significant rewards and blessings. We get better at praying by practice. It is a process. The bible talks about when men began to call upon the name of the Lord. We all need to embrace the art of prayer like we have never done before. We need to develop our prayer lives, we need to commit more time to praying, for praying is one of the ways of getting to know God better and developing a relationship with Him.

Fortunately, no one is excluded from the school of prayer. As long as we can express ourselves and articulate our emotions and needs in words we can pray. Prayer has no age restrictions or any restrictions whatsoever – gender, ethnicity or location. We can pray from anywhere. The only thing that can permanently hinder prayers is un-confessed sin.  This is why we all need to be right with God. Prayer is a privilege of the redeemed. The benefits, power and purpose of prayers are so vital that the benefit of prayers is a good reason to pursue a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus. Prayer works. It is time to embrace prayer as a means to turning our lives around for good and the lives of all our loved ones.

May you embrace praying like never before and find the rewards and benefits that God makes available in the place of prayer in Jesus name.

Prayer guide:

  • Lord, I thank you for the privilege and opportunity to pray.
  • Lord, help me to see and experience the power of prayer.

Prayer habits for the New Year!

Prayer habits for the New Year!

“Pray without ceasing.” – 1st Thessalonians 5:17.

“Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.” – Psalm 55:17

It is with great joy and expectation that I welcome you into this New Year. I know that the Lord that has graciously spared us throughout the last year is able to keep all that has been committed into His hands. This New Year has a lot of promises, in Isaiah 3:10 the Lord says “Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings”. I am therefore bold to say that in this New Year, it shall be well with you.

We have been talking about prayers last year; we have covered an introduction to prayers and described what praying is and how to pray. This is because this New Year that has just stated is one in which prayers is an absolute necessity for us to survive. The level of praying that sustained us last year is not sufficient for this New Year. Indeed, the level of prayers that brought us into the New Year cannot take us through it. We need to develop our prayer life, develop our prayer altar and develop an enduring & sustainable prayer habit for the new challenges in this New Year.

This is a year like none before it. It has never been experienced until now. We really have to pray like we have never prayed before. We need to go into every month of this New Year knowing & fully understanding God’s purpose for us in the month and the entire year. There is a plan for the year. It is a good plan. The plan is however known to only God. Jeremiah 29:11 says: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” We can only know the plan if God draws us voluntarily or compulsorily to the place of habitual prayers.

The needs for the New Year can only be met in the place of intense habitual prayers. Matthew 7:7-8 says “7Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” We therefore know that when we ask, we shall receive. Philippians 4:19 further assures us that “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Prayers work wonders and they will work wonders for us this year in Jesus name.

Prayers need to however be a habit that is done multiple times a day. The sweet Psalmist of Israel indicates that for him, prayers are done in the evening, morning and noon. This means that he makes an appointment of it and it has constituted a habit. We need a similar prayer habit this year, we need to be able to say that we pray every evening and every Morning and every Afternoon. We especially need this habit as this year contains several innumerable situations that would require God’s help.

2nd Chronicles 20:4 says “And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD.” Asking God for help is the simplest response to any difficult situation that this year may present. For this to happen we need to have a relationship with God and this relationship would be manifested by a fruitful Prayer Habit. This year is a very great year; together we will command 2013 and extract the best out of this year in the place of prayers. Again – Happy New Year!

Prayer guide:

  • Father, I thank you for this new year in Jesus name.
  • Father, let the grace for intense prayers fall upon me now in Jesus name.
  • Father, let every root of prayerlessness in my life be consumed by Prayer Revival Fire in the name of Jesus.
  • Oh Lord arise, grant me “Holy Detention” in the place of prayers in the name of Jesus.
  • Father help me to be able to walk closer with you, see you more clearly, love you more dearly and follow you more nearly in the name of Jesus.

God answers prayers

God answers prayers.

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:”

-          Matthew 7:7

The assurance that we have in the Lord is that He is the God that answers prayers. He promises that when we ask we will be given, when we seek we will find and when we knock, the door will be open unto us. Indeed the greatest risk is not one of an unanswered prayer but one of an unoffered prayer. Knowing that God answers prayers and praying to him in faith is a pre-requisite to having your needs met. Every major move of God in history has always been traceable to a believer who decided to pray and there is no need, physical, financial, marital or emotional that is too big or too small for God to handle. He is only a prayer away.

You don’t have to live perpetually with that affliction or sickness. Whatever the limitation is on your life, you can decide to break free today. The way of prayer is the way of victory. In 1 Samuel 1, Hannah had a limitation in her life. It was obvious from the story that she was helpless. Not only was she barren, she was a made a subject of mockery by her subordinate. Hannah’s prayer was one of the deepest supplications every recorded in the pages of the scriptures, she prayed out her heart unto God- it was a heartfelt prayer, and the Lord heard her. She gave birth to Samuel which is translated ‘for I have asked him of the Lord’. God answers prayers.

Paul had ministered deliverance to a damsel that was possessed with the spirit of divination and as a result incurred the anger of her masters. They in turn plotted against Paul and he was imprisoned and thrown into a dark dungeon alongside his assistant, Silas. But at midnight, Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises to God despite their current predicament. Their prayers brought God into the scene with an earthquake that led to the jailer eventually accepting the gospel. This is a prove that God answers prayers.

There are setbacks that however limit us from going to God in prayers. These setbacks must be dealt with if we are to breakthrough and be victorious. The first major setback or reason why we do not experience the power and love of God in the place of prayer is our prayerlessness. A lot of people do not bother to pray and those who want to pray worry about being sure that the requests that they want to present are worthy of praying over. They either do not want to “disturb” God with their “little” requests or they do not know if God cares about those details of their lives. Philippians 4:6 (New century Version) says “Do not worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks.” God wants us to talk to Him about everything. Do not hold back on any prayer concern.

The second major setback is sin. The bible says that if we regard iniquity in our heart, the Lord will not answer our prayers. If we cherish sin more than obeying God in every way, God will not answer us (Psalm 66:18). Are there un-confessed sins in your heart and life, confess them to God in prayers and depart from them and be restored to the place of prayer power in Jesus name. The bible also assures us that if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and clean us of all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

After these set-backs, we need to persevere in prayers. The bible talks of Daniel who through perseverance in the place of fasting and praying was able to get answers to his prayers. He fasted for 21 days and God came through for Him.

In this month of November at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Victory House London, we would be fasting and praying for the first 21 days in our annual Breakthrough Conference, this is a time we meet together to pray together on all the issues that concern us and the Lord always shows up at the meetings and pampers us with instantaneous answers to our prayers. For more information, please visit the church’s website – www.rccgvictoryhouse.com

The Breakthrough Conference (which is also popularly referred to as the Daniel Fast) is a season of seeing God do many great things. I invite you to be a part of it.

The purpose of Prayer

“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not” -	Jeremiah 33:3 No matter how you feel about praying, there is no substitute for it. We must pray whether we feel like it or not. The reality of the matter is that the more we do not feel like praying, the more we ought to pray. We must keep praying until we feel like praying. Someone once said – “Seven days without prayers make one weak”. We really have no choice if we are to be successful in the things of God. This is the injunction of the Lord. Luke 18:1 says that “And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;” We are to keep praying and not give up or get discouraged. Below are some of the reasons why we have no choice but to pray. These reasons, though not in any way exhaustive, constitutes the purpose of prayer It is through prayer that we enforce God’s will on earth and in our lives. Matthew 6:10. The hands that created the Heavens and the Earth can be moved in prayers. We cannot come to God or walk with God without praying. Through prayers, we commune with the Lord, know what is on His mind for our lives and for every situation that we present to Him. When we are praying, we not only speak with God, we commune and fellowship with Him. We also receive instructions in the place of prayer concerning whatever situation that might be confronting us. 2Chro. 20:4-17. Praying is the response given to us as believers in order to overcome sickness. James 5:16 tells us that as we confess our sins and pray one for another, that we would be healed. It goes on to say that when our prayers are fervent, they will avail a great deal. Prayer is an expression of faith in God. It is in praying to God that we prove our trust in Him. Prayer also is the means to overcoming temptations. According to Matthew 26:41, we need to watch and PRAY if we are to avoid falling into temptations. If you desire a closer walk with the Lord and victory over the devil and his host of demons, then you need to take prayers more seriously. Jude 1:20 admonishes us to build up ourselves in our most holy faith. Prayer is the way to build up yourself and increase your faith walk with God. In our warfare with the Devil, every weapon that we have needs to be operated and activated in the place of prayers. What more, there is nothing that we can do as believers that the devil is not good at. We can praise and worship God, we can even quote scriptures eloquently, but in all these areas, we will find the devil quite competent. The only thing we can do as believers that the Devil cannot do is pray, since he has no one to pray to. This is why our prayers represent a vital tool if we are to overcome the enemy. Our prayers can cause us to experience a miraculous turnaround. Job was restored when he prayed for his friends. Job 42:10. The reality of the matter is that the greatest privilege every challenge we face provide to us is the opportunity to pray and see results in our favour. It is through prayer that we discover and fulfil God’s purpose for our lives. Until God draws you to a place of prayer voluntarily or compulsorily, you cannot truly and fully understand His purpose for your life. Jeremiah 29:11-12 God is committed to answering prayers. He always answers when a believer prays. Psalm 65:2. He is also committed to answering the prayer for forgiveness and salvation of the non-believer. In fact, His word declares that if our sins be as scarlet, God is asking us to come and rub minds together with Him on it and He will wash us and we will be white as snow Isaiah 1:18. Have you been to Jesus for His cleansing power? Are you washed in the blood of the lamb? If not, you have an opportunity to do so today in the place of prayers. Believe me beloved, the prayer of forgiveness and salvation for yourself or for another is one of the greatest prayers you can ever pray, and you know what; it is guaranteed an answer. I will like to hear from you, please email me at prayerworks@rccgvictoryhouse.com For any question you might have, why not send me an email at the email address above. Prayer Arrows: 1.	Lord, I confess and repent of my carelessness about my spiritual life. 2.	Father, forgive me of any sin of indulgence that has contributed to my present spiritual state. 3.	Lord, I repent of the sin of not having a virile personal/family altar. Please help me to start one today, and make me to remain consistent in Jesus’ name. 4.	Lord, please give me a soul thirst and heart hunger for your presence. Give me also an unusual appetite for Your Word in Jesus’ name. 5.	I come against you foul spirit of prayerlessness, I bind and cast you out of my life in the name of Jesus. 6.	I pull down and demolish every satanic altar raised against my spiritual life right now in Jesus’ name. Every programmed evil against my prayer life shall no longer stand in the name of Jesus. 7.	In Jesus’ name, I command every demon of lukewarmness, coldness, spiritual apathy, fear of prayer and spiritual dryness to get out of my life right now.
